Paddling for Hurricane Dorian Relief
Donation protected
Hurricane Dorian has decimated Grand Bahama and Abaco, the two northernmost islands in The Bahamas, uprooting lives, livelihoods, and all sense of normalcy.
As a Bahamian living in New York, away from home, I was desperate for a way to help.
I found out about the effects of Hurricane Dorian while competing with New York Outrigger in Hawai'i, and think this sport of long-distance canoeing is the perfect metaphor for teamwork through uncertainty, supporting others, and encouraging others along the journey.
While I now live in New York, I am a "born, bred, ga dead Bahamian." My family and many friends still live across the Bahama islands, including those destroyed, and while the water has the power to destroy, in this case, water also has the power to heal.
New York Outrigger has planned two long-distance paddles: one to Staten Island, and one around Manhattan. We are supporting our brothers and sisters in the Bahamian islands with our time, our sweat, and time on the water.
The Staten Island paddle will take place on September 21st, and will be approximately 20 miles.
The circumnavigation of Manhattan will take place on October 6th, and will be approximately 30 miles.
Proceeds will be split between the following non-profits in The Bahamas: IDEA Relief (moving people and supplies between the affected islands and new homes), New Providence Community Church (assisting in temporary accommodations and jobs for relocated persons), the Bahamas Hurricane Restoration Fund, and HeadKnowles. These organizations know their missions best, and I know they will use the funds well.
I have worked with the leaders of these organizations following hurricane strikes in 2015 and can vouch not only for their validity but their commitment to ensuring that funds go to where they are needed most.
Any amount helps, and we thank you for your support!
Withdrawal of funds will be made at the end of the month to my US account, and I will transfer them to the Bahamian beneficiaries from my account directly.
