Paddle, Pedal and Pound For Patrick

There’s this boy, who’s always had a piece of my heart…I’m his aunt.

In a single moment, my Patrick’s life changed forever after a tragic accident, and he sustained a traumatic brain injury and many other physical complications. Patrick’s injuries are severe and life altering, we know this, but he is showing an incredible will and desire to live. After an excruciating five weeks in ICU, and one too many knocks on death’s door, Patrick has shown us that his fight for life is unstoppable, and this has inspired us to stand up in his honour. Against all odds, he has now been transferred to the neuro ward within the Hospital.

Patrick’s little girl, Zara, faces a more uncertain future as he now begins the long road of recovery where nothing is guaranteed. What questions will she have? What thoughts are swimming in her head? How can her family explain all this? How much can a little girl know or understand? We know Patrick’s recovery, both physically and mentally, will be slow, sometimes cruel, sometimes painful, with setbacks along the way but we can rely on each other and help support Patrick to continue the fight. We can’t do this on our own and neither can he. Patrick will continue to need round the clock care and support, and he will require equipment and aids going forward, above and beyond what the Health Service can offer him. Help us to ensure he can have the quality of life he deserves.

As a family, we don’t have all the answers, but what we do have is pure grit and determination. We stand side by side and will drive our bodies through physical pain completing sporting challenges to raise essential funds for Patrick and his family.

Kickstarting these efforts is my husband, Ally, known affectionately as Dally to Patrick (half uncle, half daddy ) who is undertaking an Iron Man Challenge on the 7th May, a 3.8kmswim, 180km Bike Ride and 42km Marathon.
