WHO WE ARE
We are Stevenson, AL citizens (teachers and other individuals, businesses, community organizations) concerned about children who are food insecure. This means they don't have enough food to eat and are unsure where or when their next meal might come.
WHAT WE DO
We help children at Stevenson’s Elementary and Middle schools get nutritious and easy-to-prepare foods through weekends.
WHO BENEFITS
Children eligible for free and reduced meals of the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs are the ones receiving these packs. Almost seventy percent of Stevenson’s school children meet this criteria of eligibility.
HOW WE ARE STRUCTURED
Membership is open to the public. Our committee meets as needed to make decisions concerning the backpack program.
WHAT'S IN A PACK
Each pack is assembled for under $10. Containers are easy-open (pull-top can lid) as families sometimes have no can opener or children cannot operate them. Foods must be edible at room temperature if a child isn’t old enough to cook. Certain commonly allergenic foods are omitted. Packs are light enough for small children to carry in recyclable plastic bags. Educators at the schools slip the packs into a child's backpack confidentially.
HOW WILL THE MONEY BE SPENT?
We are now expanding to include the middle school in our former "elementary school only" process. This means more packs and more children to serve. In order to continue this service and one day provides weekly packs, we are relying on the generosity of community members. If you would like to help by contributing money, time, energy and/or ideas, the Buddy Bags program welcomes you! We are grateful for any donations we receive and know the children that you are helping are grateful too.
