PACC volunteer Sarah’s turn to receive help
Donation protected
Sarah has metastatic melanoma.
It often takes a major negative life event to realize the true value of life. Many of you know Sarah from volunteering at Pima Animal Care Center. She began by walking dogs. Since then, she has fostered and adopted former at-risk “best ever not-a-pancake pretzel bagel breakfast pastry walrus” Biscuit, fostered Leroy, Bounty, Leo and Kaleb (one of the most challenging pups ever), and donated much her time creating the most awesome renditions of our favorite urgent dogs.
I knew of Sarah through volunteering at PACC where she started in December 2021 shortly after losing her ride-or-die canine adventure partner Oshie. I didn’t know her but she reached out to me regarding an at-risk pup named Chauncey. She told me she had 2 cats and that was a no go for Chaunce. About a month later, she messaged me about then-at-risk Biscuit and I admit I was hesitant and thought to myself, “it’ll never work in a home with cats.” But guess what? IT WORKED. And it’s because she has been the most dedicated, consistent, patient, loyal, humble, and committed dog person I have ever come across. She puts in the work. She puts in the training. She puts in the time. She puts in the blood, sweat and tears and doesn’t give up.
Biscuit unequivocally wouldn’t be alive let alone thriving and loving life without her. Kaleb certainly wouldn’t be here and making such wonderful improvements without her. Leroy, Bounty and Leo might STILL be at the shelter but instead they are in safe, wonderful adoptive homes because of her.
Now she needs some help and, while she didn’t ask for it, she absolutely deserves it. Sarah is reserved and quiet about any potential struggles. She’s the type to just work through it as she does with her pups. I didn’t know she had a melanoma removed several months ago until a few weeks ago when she had to undergo a second major surgery because they didn’t get clean margins. Her family lives across the country and now, at only 38 years old, she has been diagnosed with metastatic melanoma. I never know what to say. I never know what to do. I know I can’t fix the situation or take away the fear or uncertainty, but I can help in any way possible and that includes monetarily. Perhaps if she can have some of that type of stress lifted, she can focus on fighting for the future, whatever that may look like.
I know she will have lots of doc appointments, treatments, and more testing in the near future. She might have to move closer to family. And while health insurance is helpful, it doesn’t cover 100%. It all adds up. I’d guess she’ll have to miss work from time to time, and she also had to pay for boarding with her trusted trainer as she recovered from the most recent extensive surgery (she still has restrictions). I don’t have many answers but I can start somewhere and that’s with this fundraiser.
So, if you can give, awesome. If you can share, great. If you can send light, love and positive thoughts her way, please do. I have always admired Sarah’s work with Biscuit, Kaleb and all her fosters, her generosity, talent and level headedness. I really can’t say enough about how much she has done for these dogs and you know how cuckoo I am about these PACC pups. I don’t know what the future holds but I know one thing: I am better off from knowing her.
Thank you for reading. I know we can come through for Sarah as she has come through for so many of our favorite dogs.
