Chicago Fire Takes a Life and Security From Our Family.


On December 10, 2019, my cousin, and beloved, daughter, sister, spiritual and community leader Zakharria Ford was killed in a fire where she fought for her life yet she did not come out alive. She was a 27-year-old woman who was in the midst of so many creative an entrepreneurial projects; she was the light of our family who was dedicated to adding lasting wealth to a family—like many Black families—who were short of closing the wealth gap because of well-known systemic problems. Zakharria saw past that and therefore we all did.

Moreover, our hardships did not stop there. Never mind the instant material losses of a home that was shelter for many, her mother, my aunt, Renita Ford, did what any mother would do: she went back into the fire trying to save her daughter.

In her attempt to battle the already blazing fire, Renita obtained debilitating 3rd degree burns. She is still in critical condition. Our friends and family are locked in prayer and love in this still very shocking moment for everyone.

It is not an overstatement to say they lost everything. All at once, our dear Zaharria, they no longer have a home to return to and the full health of Renita, and her husband, who were also in the fire are all gone. On the road the recovery and healing, this will be an uphill battle for them and our family alike.

Although we are a family that is rich with love and spirituality, we need support with this sudden financial hardship. 10K is the bare minimum we are asking for; it will go towards a memorial service, and recovery.
