Desperate times call for desperate measures

Any one who knows Angela is aware that they are far more comfortable providing support and assistance than asking for it, but like the title says Desperate times call for Desperate Measures.

Angela has spent their professional and personal life helping others. Whether it be the work in Peer Advocacy that Angela did professionally or the various times they’ve helped a friend or colleague, Angela has always been  one of the first to raise their hand when help is needed.

Now Angela needs your help. Angela had to go out on Short Term Disability in January of 2019 for a myriad of medical problems.

This happened shortly after Angela expressed their gender identity at work and received backlash.

Angela was already ill with a respiratory infection when this event happened and it had a tremendous impact on their mental health.  So much so that on 1/2/19 Angela has to go to the ER for symptoms of a heart attack.

Luckily Angela’s heart was okay but the incident led to finding out the cause of Angela’s symptoms.

It was discovered that Angela had degenerated discs in their cervical spine that were causing the left arm numbness and weakness.

12 weeks of physical therapy had limited success.  During that period, Angela also tore their meniscus. That also kept Angela out of work.

The chronic pain took its toll on Angela’s mental health and their depression, anxiety and PTSD kicked back into high gear. Angela became suicidal and has barely avoided hospitalization.

While there is is no doubt that Angela qualifies for the Disability policy offered by their employer, it has proven very difficult to get the claim approved.

The disability carrier has had a preexisting condition clause. Angela would not qualify for payment if their mental health symptoms were present 11/1/17-12/31/18.

Angela was in counseling during that period. Not for mental health symptoms for exploration of their gender identity. The insurance company is stating that since Angela was in counseling, their claim cannot be approved.

Angela and their family have been surviving on her spouses SSDI, his part time income and the $150 from NYS STD.  they managed to do this despite it not being easy.

NYS STD has run its course and Angela now has no income of their own. The household bills are already in arrears and without help, Angela and their family face the choice between rent, power or car payments, all of which are necessary.

Angela is asking their friends and family for support during their time of need.

Realizing that many many are also financially strapped, Angela asks that if you can’t donate, please share this post.

If there are other ways you can be of assistance, Angela asks that you contact them. This could look like help with accessing community resources such as legal assistance and food pantries.

Thanks for reading this through and Angela hopes they can count on your support.
