Mia Miller’s cancer, heart and kidney battle
Donation protected
In the later part of 2010 Mia was having symptoms of unusual fatigue, soreness and rapid weight loss. A short time later she noticed a bulge in her chest and went to get it examined during the first part of 2011. As many of you now know at the young age of 24 Mia received the devastating news that she had cancer. She was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.
She elected to undergo chemotherapy and due to the demands of the treatment she was forced to move back to her hometown with her mother in Bastrop Texas.

After completing her initial treatment that summer, Mia would have only 7 months of remission before learning her cancer had returned. In April of 2012 she would begin another battle against this disease in the form of several rounds of chemo each requiring weeklong stays in the hospital.
2013 brought another new year and another new relapse for Mia. This time with refractory diffuse large B cell Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma requiring an autologous stem cell transplantation. And this time requiring a months long stay at MD Anderson in Houston Texas. Although she had an unlimited amount of love and support from friends and family the long duration of treatment required her to sometimes suffer and fight in solitude.

This treatment resulted in a couple of cancer free months but she was again stricken. This time it had morphed into Hodgkins Lymphoma. The treatment now, Allogenic Stem Cell Transplant. From the gift of a miracle in the form of a loving sister, the procedure took place, a brutally painful process.
In 2014 Mia suffered multiple cardiac arrests which led to a severe drop in her heart's ability to function at a high level. Because of Mia’s general condition of fragility at the time coupled with an adverse reaction to an anti rejection medication she developed a very rare disease called aHUS(Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome).
The disease has required Mia to endure dialysis treatment 3-4 days a week for almost 5 years, and additional treatment, an infusion of Solaris, the most expensive drug on the market, every 2 weeks for the rest of her life to prevent kidney failure and thrombosis. In short, Mia is in end stage kidney failure, and is in need of a kidney transplant.

One of the stipulations required to receive a kidney transplant is to be cancer free for an extended period of time. Mia has fought that battle and overcome poor odds with her courage and fortitude over these past 8 years. Please join me now in helping her to continue pushing back against a disease that has affected so many of us.

This fund is designed to help Mia with not only the major cost of the transplant surgery she is so in need of and recovery from it, but with some of the more overlooked expenditures like donor screening and lifelong medication required.
Mia has her whole life ahead of her and plans to pick back up working part time and or learning a new trade or skill. She loves to travel and has been able to take some mini vacations with her family during times of remission. When she regains her strength her family plans on taking her to do some traveling, perhaps to Italy, something she has missed out on over the past 7 years.

If you are a friend, family member, acquaintance, someone that has been affected by this disease or any other, or has a soft spot in their heart and is willing to help, on behalf of Mia’s family, we ask that you please consider contributing to help them ease the financial burden during this major life event. We understand that not everyone will be able to make a financial donation, in that case we ask that you please share this page as much or as often as possible to help them spread the word. Mia and her family have an extremely long road ahead of them but they are forever grateful to the friends and family that have and continue to love, support and lift them through this difficult time. We will continue to update everyone via social media as often as we can but please do not hesitate to personally reach out to the family- your calls, texts, emails and prayers are very important to them! Thank you all so much.
