My name is Francesca, and my husband, Alex, is battling stage 4 lung cancer. Anyone who has been touched by advanced-stage cancer knows the financial hardship and the feelings of helplessness that come with it. I knew we needed help. But it was our son, Ben, who stepped up to create our message and video for a GoFundMe campaign. Thank you Ben, and thank you all for taking the time to hear our story and consider helping us out. I’m Ben, and this is a picture of my family; my father Alex, my stepmom Francesca, and our two dogs Willow and Spice. We got some bad news towards the end of the summer this year. After experiencing a cough and shortness of breath on one of his many hikes in the Adirondacks, he made plans to see his doctor, who put him on allergy medications. But it didn’t take long to realize that something else was causing the problem. The shortness of breath, the coughing and eventual wheezing led to body scans and a biopsy. My dad is only 50 and quit smoking over 18 years ago. Sometimes things happen that just don’t make sense. On August 31st Alex, my dad, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Adenocarcinoma.
We believe in a positive outlook, supporting my father, and visualizing success. These are all things that’ll be imperative for helping my dad win this battle. There’s no “giving up,” no surrender, no scenario where he doesn’t make it out of this on the other side. His cancer has metastasized to other areas of his body, but thankfully not to any other major organs.
Things won’t be easy financially. My dad has been a middle and high school art teacher for 15 years… the last three of which his position was reduced to part-time. He’s been working as an Uber and Lyft driver to make extra money to pay the bills. With help, guidance, and a recommended integrative cancer therapy, we know he can beat this. The doctors have informed us that the treatments will most likely go on for years and require travel out of state. Out-of-pocket expenses are going to be high. Money is tight, as it is for so many of us… but even the smallest donation… one dollar… five dollars… could help us and our family more than you know.
