The blue skies were a warm blessing on this early February afternoon. The golden sun had come out to dry up yesterday’s rain. It was the kind of day to take the long way ‘round. He kissed his wife goodbye as he rushed out the door to hop on his bike. Landon, no stranger to long days in the driver seat, revved up his motorcycle and headed on down the scenic route.

Natalie, starting to wonder where her husband was, finally sat down with her kitties to take a break. Coaching the local cheer team through the state championship takes a lot of energy! It was one of her first nights home early and was looking forward to a relaxing night. Her and Landon had plans to get dinner in Salem tonight. She knew he would be on his way back to her soon.

7:30 pm
The phone finally rings. “Is this Mrs. Pope?” A million emotions set in as Natalie receives news that her husband had been hit by a car while on his motorcycle and was being airlifted to the emergency department. Knowing only that her husband was in grave danger she rushed to the hospital. Landon’s mom joined her on the long drive to the biggest hospital in the state. They were met at the front desk with dismissal “Absolutely no visitors are allowed in the ICU, per COVID protocol.” They were persistent on not leaving till they got answers on Landon's condition.

Over three hours into this nightmare Natalie was finally able to speak to a doctor. They walked her through the damage step by step. Landon had broken his sternum, left ribs, pelvic bone, left femur, and a compressed lower vertebra disc. Also, his broken ribs had punctured his left lung. He was scheduled for surgery the next morning for reconstruction of his left femur. They had him stable, his brain and vital organs were ok. He was going to live!
Since that not-so-quiet evening, Landon has been alone in the ICU for almost two weeks. The road ahead is long, but with hope, it leads to recovery.
