In August 2021, a young couple, Naresh and Padma welcomed a new member to their family, a beautiful baby boy.
The KC family was overjoyed with the arrival of their only child, Pranaya. Pranaya is a toddler with an infectious smile and a love for life. The KC family had great hope and dreams for a joyous and prosperous future for their child.
However, soon the hopes and dreams were shattered. The parents noticed something unusual with their beloved child’s behavior. They sought medical help and were devastated by the findings. At a very young and fragile age of just 9 months, Pranaya was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
SMA is a rare and debilitating genetic disorder that affects the motor neurons in the spinal cord, leading to weakness and wasting of the muscles. Sadly, treatments can help slow down its progression. But, the cost of treatment is extremely expensive.
At such a young age, Pranaya is facing many challenges due to his condition. He struggles with basic movements such as crawling, sitting up, and standing. His parents have had to adapt their life to accommodate his needs, and they have made difficult decisions about his care and treatment. As there is no care facility or even proper awareness regarding SMA in Nepal they are seeking treatment and answers in India.
The only other option is a medication Zolgensma that can help slow down its progression. The cost of the treatment is $ 2.1 million.
As the KC family belongs to a normal middle-class family in Nepal, the cost of the treatment is unaffordable for them. They are turning to the community for support. They are raising funds to cover the costs of his ongoing medical care, including specialized equipment and therapies, as well as potential future treatments.
