Help William Get a Service Dog and Restore His Confidence in the Future

William Fortin Thibault, 15, grew up in Fort McMurray before his family sought refuge in Plamondon after the devastating wildfires of 2016. Now in 11th grade at École Beauséjour, he faces daily challenges due to chronic anxiety, severe depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A service dog could be life-changing for him, providing security, comfort, and independence.

After a rigorous evaluation, William has been approved to receive a highly trained service dog from Aspen Service Dogs, an organization recognized by the Alberta government. These specialized dogs are more than just companions: they are trained to detect and mitigate anxiety attacks, provide emotional grounding, and offer a calming presence during difficult moments.

Living outside Edmonton, William needs a fully trained dog, which comes at a significant cost. We are launching this fundraiser to help him get the support he needs.

In his own words, William describes how a service dog would help him overcome his anxiety:

"When I'm alone, my mind races, and negative thoughts become overwhelming. But with a dog, everything changes. Its presence grounds me, gives me a reason to breathe, to keep going. It will help me face daily challenges, regain a stable routine, and believe in myself."

William Fortin Thibault, 15 ans, a grandi à Fort McMurray avant que sa famille ne trouve refuge à Plamondon après les feux de forêt dévastateurs de 2016. Aujourd’hui en 11e année à l’école Beauséjour, il fait face à des défis quotidiens liés à l’anxiété chronique, la dépression profonde et au trouble de stress post-traumatique (TSPT). Un chien d’assistance pourrait transformer sa vie, en lui apportant sécurité, réconfort et autonomie.

Après une évaluation rigoureuse, William a été accepté pour recevoir un chien d’assistance hautement entraîné par Aspen Service Dogs, une organisation reconnue par le gouvernement de l’Alberta. Ces chiens spécialisés ne sont pas de simples compagnons : ils sont formés pour détecter et atténuer les crises d’anxiété, offrir un ancrage émotionnel et assurer une présence apaisante dans les moments difficiles.

Vivant en dehors d’Edmonton, William a besoin d’un chien déjà entièrement formé, ce qui représente un coût important. Nous lançons donc cette levée de fonds pour l’aider à obtenir le soutien dont il a besoin.

Dans ses propres mots, William décrit comment un chien d’assistance lui permettrait de surmonter son anxiété :

"Quand je suis seul, mon esprit s’emballe, les pensées négatives deviennent écrasantes. Mais avec un chien, tout change. Sa présence me ramène sur terre, me donne une raison de respirer, de persévérer. Il m’aidera à affronter les défis du quotidien, à retrouver une routine stable et à croire en moi."
