Help Expecting Family Escape Toxic Lithium Fire
Donation protected
We are a small family living about 1,000 feet from the largest, failed, and unstable lithium battery storage in the world ( Moss Landing, CA).⚠️ In only three months, we are expecting a new baby: as I just reached my last trimester. At 5 months pregnant thousands of batteries burst into flames hundreds of feet high and spread heavy metals and toxic gases across undetermined mileage stemming from the epicenter. Our boat, neighboring agricultural soil and “protected” estuary tested for increased heavy metals; resulting in doubling medical appointments for my pregnancy as well as increased oversight of my 8 yr old’s health (who is homeschooled onsite). We responded to a call to evacuate, yet returned to continued symptoms of toxicity. In only one month’s time from the main fire, a secondary fire ⚠️erupted with plumes of smoke overshadowing our home once more. Due to immediate onset of symptoms, we evacuated a second time. This has cost us tremendous financial distress; it has also resulted in continued stress and concern for our expectant baby and our family’s short and long-term health and compromised housing safety.
After the second fire, and entering my third and final trimester we have expedited a search for a safe relocation for birth and the first 6 months of our new baby’s life. Our local newspaper and online news reported and published this week that there are no current plans on how or when they will be able to remove the hazardous Materials. ~ They also reported ongoing fire eruptions are likely since they do not have a safe way to deactivate or decouple the STILL smoldering remains of thousands of toxic lithium batteries. We have found a cozy, stable location not too far from my prenatal care but 33 miles away from our current location at the epicenter of this unprecedented disaster. Those who know this area understand that first month’s rent plus a security deposit is a heavy downpayment in an already challenging time. Pregnancy risks have reduced us temporarily to a one-person income. We LOVE our home/ boat and DO NOT WANT TO LEAVE, but we cannot come home not knowing if it’s safe to be here or when the next fires will force us out. We cannot bring a brand new baby’s lungs home to this dangerous unknown experiment. Please help us fundraise our security deposit plus two months’ rent so we can rest and gain some safety in these frightening times. We want to continue to keep our slip and our boat, but We NEED to get somewhere stable to LIVE for a safe birth and the first critical months of development of our new baby. We hope to create a safe distance from the hazards of this toxic situation until they are properly decontaminated. We are humbly seeking your support in this stressful time. We pray for our friends and neighbors who are also affected. We do not want to lose our home in our treasured marine sanctuary or give up our longtime community. Right now, however, safety is first and those who live near and far have felt and know the symptoms we experience are unbearable, from tasting metal to headaches and respiratory distress. Being as close as we are, we cannot wait for change, we have to relocate to protect ourselves. Please help if you can
