I'm embarrassed, I'm humbled, but mostly, I'm desperate.
The past few days have been a devastating whirlwind of change. A family emergency has unexpectedly left my uncle (a single father) and his daughter without a home and without the ability to be together.
My family is helping in all the ways they can, and my uncle's siblings, including my parents, have already spent thousands of dollars to support him. Unfortunately, his situation won't be quickly resolved, and the light of his life, his daughter, needs a place to live for an extended length of time, or risks being placed in a foster home.
My cousin is 11 and just a year younger than my daughter. I brought her home to Colorado to live with me because I love and want to protect her, but also because our family had no other option. So, sweet Brooke is moving in with Emma and me!
Emma is a single child for a reason. We've lived within our means so that I could give her what she deserves. Adding another middle-schooler to the mix isn't going to be seamless, but we have to make it work. Our very small two-bedroom apartment just isn't a viable option for two children. And on top of that, I now have all the expenses that come with raising a child.
I need help. My family won't let us fail, but they don't have much left to give right now. Brooke needs school supplies and bedroom furniture. And, in order to make an emergency move into a larger home, I need to come up with the first month's rent and deposit, as well as basic monthly costs to support an additional small human.
Keeping Brooke with family and providing her with the support she needs as we navigate this difficult time is the way that I can help. But I can't do it alone. Anything you can give will help make Brooke's transition and our new life more achievable.
With endless gratitude,
Jeriel
