Mission Statement

Out of the Box is a project run by Michigan State University students to show how creativity connects. We will be stopping in 5 cities to help non-profit organizations with their images on our way to South By Southwest Interactive, the nerve center of creative thinkers. Along the way we will produce a video web series to show our progress and the people, cities and causes that we will connect with through creativity.



Description

We are the Media Sandbox Street Team, an elite group of students from Michigan State University combining journalism, creative advertising and media studies. Starting March 1st, we want to take a trip that shows how creativity connects. We will be stopping in Indianapolis, Nashville, Memphis, Dallas and ending in Austin, Texas for South by Southwest Interactive. During these stops, we plan to help non-profit organizations through the creative work that we specialize in"”design, branding, communication and social media"”to help them help others to the fullest. We also want to use this as an opportunity for alumni to meet with current students and pay it forward by giving back. South by Southwest is a creative mecca and we're thrilled to end our journey in such a place. However, we need your help to make this happen. We need funding to get to these cities and do amazing things for non-profit organizations in need of a creative revamp. We will document every step of the way by creating a short video web series that will turn into a documentary by journey's end. This could be the start of something great for MSU students, alumni, non-profits and all creative individuals nationwide. Help us do great things.

What happens at each non-profit?

We will be spending a day at each non-profit working on anything that can help them do their work better. This can include anything from:

-Design
-Branding
-Press releases
-Social media
-Event promotion
-Website design
-And a lot more

We will speak with the non-profits before to decide what projects would best benefit them. However, a majority of the work will happen the day we are at the non-profit. We will then present the work over a catered dinner at the end of each day.

Benefits for Alumni

For alumni in the cities we are visiting, we want you to help us give back. By giving to our project, you gain the opportunity to vote for a non-profit in your city that you think needs our help. We will pick a non-profit based on votes, and on the day of our project alumni are invited to a catered dinner where we will present what we created. This dinner is our chance to personally meet you and say thank you for donating.

What we need

-Transportation: We are hoping to find an RV that will bring the 11 of us to Austin and back.
-Places to stay: Hotels, motels, campgrounds, a person's home"”we just need a place to rest our heads for the night.
-Gas: We need fuel!
-Money to help the non-profits: We are planning on $500 for each non-profit that we will use for printing, websites and anything else. The money we don't use will be donated to the non- profit.
-Equipment: Video, design, editing"”sometimes we need extra equipment for the work we do.
-SXSW Passes: SXSW is our destination, and passes are expensive.

Every dollar we do not use will be divided amongst the non-profits that we visit. We will only use what we need, the rest we want to use to help others.

Keeping you updated

If you donate to us, we want to show you exactly how we are using your contribution. Each day during the trip we will release a video depicting what we did that day. We will also be updating our social media pages so you will know what we're doing and how we're doing it.
