Hi! This is my mom, Carol Simonton.
She is standing in front of the home her late husband built in the foothills of the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains, setting out on a morning hike with her dogs.
While Carol mainly gets by on a widow's Social Securities benefits, she also brings in a little income teaching yoga classes. (Those sun salutations keep her as limber at 85 as she was at 25. Go, Mom!)
Four years ago, an ear infection impaired her hearing, and my mom, once as socially active as she is physically active, finds herself increasingly isolated.
Because she cannot hear well, she has started avoiding social gatherings, even with old friends. She becomes disoriented because she can't follow a conversation. Interacting with her students in her yoga classes can be a problem, which can impact her earning ability. (You don't holler at your teacher in a yoga class!)
Recently, after a free hearing assessment at her local Costco, she tried a pair of their Kirkland Signature Digital Hearing Instruments and LOVED them. She could hear everything around her, and said she couldn't even feel she was wearing hearing aids, because they were so light.
But neither Medicare nor Medicaid cover hearing aids in Virginia, and she simply cannot afford them. They cost $1499 for both ears. If my sister, Laura Grant, and I were able, we would have bought them the moment she told us she could hear again. Meeting our funding goal would allow her to purchase these aids and reopen her ability to communicate.
We have chipped in $20 here and there to help others meet their GoFundMe goals, so we know this is a process that works, one bit at a time.
Please help Carol remain meaningfully connected with her family and friends by helping her hear their loving voices.
