Our Own Voice Theatre Troupe has been creating original, thought-provoking theatre in Memphis since 1991. We use the theatre as a forum for exploring issues that affect the psychological and social well-being of all of us. We have been a Resident Company at TheatreWorks since 1995, and are the only original company still remaining.
We break the fourth wall. We invite audience participation. We challenge expectations. We have always been somewhat of an underdog in the Memphis arts scene, but now we need your help more than ever. Despite putting out meaningful and unique theatre productions twice a year, our box office revenue hasn't been substantial enough to come close to breaking even.
What your donation can do
On the surface, these funds raised will help pay for the theatre space, to pay designers, and to pay for supplies and materials for our recent production, What a Piece of Work!
The deeper meaning of your donation is the survival of Our Own Voice. We need a boost to get back on our feet, so we are asking for your help. Remaining funds, if any, will go toward developing future productions. We have a small but fierce core audience, and we want to keep making healing art for you. We want to keep making healing art for ourselves, too.
About What a Piece of Work!
Inspired by Shakespeare's timeless tale of a certain Danish prince who tragically failed to take action before it was too late, the production considers the responsibility each of us has to meet the challenges presented by the dangerously uncertain times in which we live.
This production, directed by Founding Director Bill Baker, is about resisting anything that lulls us into complacency. What a Piece of Work! ran for two weekends at TheatreWorks in Overton Square, September 29-October 7, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM.
Our Own Voice Theatre Troupe likes to say that once you participate in a show, you're a company member for life. We'd like to invite you to become a member for life now by donating. You don't even have to get up on stage (but, of course, we encourage it)!
