Our lives changed in a minute

Hi, my name is Joanne and my family would appreciate you taking time to read our story. This year my husband, Curt and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary, which almost didn't happen twice. We have spent our last two wedding anniversaries in a rehab.

On April 16, 2022, our lives changed. I was in a camp fire accident, and 63% of my total body surface was 3rd, 4th and 5th degree burns, I lost the fingers on my left hand, and was in a coma for 2 1/2 months. Rehab was slow and painful. I continue to rehab and have many years of surgeries to restore body function by releasing tendon contractures.

On May 25, 2023 our lives changed again. Curt had an infected knee but was more occupied with my rehab he kept putting off seeing the doctor. He started hallucinating which gave us a clue that something was definitely wrong. The infection moved from his knee to his spine. The infection attacked his spinal cord and he is currently paralyzed from the waist down. We hope and pray that this is not permanent.

In the mean time, we have to update our entire house to be handicap accessible. We were able to get somethings donated by local churches, Pluckemin Presbytarian and United Methodist, through Moose Lodge 988. (Hospital bed, outdoor ramps, Hoya lift and stair chair lift). We still have so many more things that need to be replaced/changed, including changing sinks, installing indoor ramps and we will need a handicap vehicle.
