Our nightmare of a journey

On Aug 3, our 6-year anniversary, we found out we were pregnant unexpectedly. Our 3 year old son was very excited to be a big brother and we couldn't be more excited to grow our family. My hCG (pregnancy hormones in your blood) was increasing appropriately for a while until Aug 18 when I started bleeding A LOT. We contacted the OBGYN who told us we had a miscarriage and were sorry for our loss. They said I didn't require any kind of follow-up or monitoring since we were so early. We started to mourn our loss and try to move forward.

After a week, I felt like something just wasn't right and I kept having this recurring dream (3 times within the week, and I never remember my dreams) that I was still pregnant. I reached out to the OBGYN again on Aug 30 and asked if we could do another blood test just to make sure everything was as expected so we could have peace of mind and closure.

The test came back and my hCG level jumped from 247 the day we were told we had a miscarriage to 900. This wasn't normal. I called the on-call nurse through the OBGYN since it was a Saturday, which ended up being the same doctor who spent maybe 7 mins with us and told us we miscarried without any follow-up. She basically said, "Sit tight until Tuesday and we will get an ultrasound but since it's a holiday weekend, there is NOTHING anyone can do right now."

Not accepting that, we went to another hospital's emergency room, where my levels showed 1147. They did 2 ultrasounds in the ER and CALLED IN a specialist who did another 3 ultrasounds. They didn't see anything but were confident I was not at immediate risk and released me after 8 hours with a follow-up hCG test & ultrasound at their actual OBGYN a couple of days later.

Since my levels kept climbing, I had an ultrasound with the new OBGYN practice on Sept 4, which found out we had an ectopic pregnancy in my left fallopian tube. This makes it a life-threatening situation and could be deadly if not taken care of. We decided to attempt the methotrexate injections instead of surgery on Sept 5 since we discovered it early enough and I was a good candidate. Everything was looking good, my hCG levels were going down appropriately and we thought we would be out of the woods soon.

On Sept 15, I woke up at 3 am with SEVERE pain in my side and started bleeding again. We called the doctor as soon as they opened and they insisted we go to the ER to be evaluated. They did tons of blood tests, including another hCG, and another ultrasound. My hCG dropped to less than 500, which was good news that the injections were working. The ER doctor didn't see anything in the ultrasound he did and was going to discharge me after consulting their OBGYN doctor on call to review everything.

The doctor came back in and said they saw some fluid near my fallopian tube so they needed the specialist to do a transvaginal ultrasound to get a better visual. Once they did, they saw my fallopian tube had actually ruptured and I was bleeding internally. They said it was a slow bleed but if we didn't do surgery now, it would continue to bleed, making it more severe and life-threatening. So within 30 mins, I was wheeled upstairs and prepped for surgery, where they had to remove my left fallopian tube.

After surgery, they said the ectopic had grown very quickly before the methotrexate kicked in and it ruptured my tube. If I didn't take the pain seriously and go be evaluated, it would have been much worse or I could have even potentially died from it.

With everything that has happened within the last month, both me and my husband have missed a lot of work, which has been unpaid. I am still not released to return to work and we have lost so much income from it all that we're in a horrible place financially (not even counting the new medical bills).

We are the kind of people who hate asking for help. But this situation is unique and we don't have any other choice but to try asking for assistance. We are fundraising to cover the lost income and mounting medical bills due to the ectopic pregnancy and subsequent surgery.
