The Parson Diaz family reached out to their 4 year old son’s teacher to share their need for food on April 10, 2020.  This family of 5 includes Sonija, Bernardo, Emilio, grandmother Sonja, and 2 month old, Nico.  It turns out that there was a lot more to their story besides concerns about food.

One week after mom gave birth to their second son, the roof of their home and the interior walls and ceilings suffered major damage after severe rain storms.  To make matters worse, mold was found in many of the walls and in the ceilings.  The entire roof had to be replaced, several walls had to be taken down and replaced, and new flooring was required. The family’s homeowners insurance did not cover the fee for the roof replacement (estimated cost of $14,000).  They used all of their savings to pay the down payment ($6,000) and still owe the balance of $8,000 to the roofing company.  The family has had to obtain credit cards to pay for their bills.  Mom went into preterm labor at 34 weeks and was hospitalized briefly (bill amount $1000).  The family also owes $5,000 for childbirth and medical fees.

Their homeowners insurance relocated the family to a hotel when Nico was 2 weeks old, where they have been for over 7 consecutive weeks.  In the midst of the pandemic quarantine and being displaced, the family has struggled significantly to make ends meet, pay the contractors, and pay the bills that continue to accrue.  Their bank account has been hit with numerous insufficient funds fees as it is at a zero balance.  They have not had any income since March, and have been using credit cards to buy necessities such as food, personal items, etc.  Mom is a middle school teacher and on the unpaid portion (4 weeks) of maternity leave.  Dad works in maintenance and has been furloughed since March.

Mom reported suffering from postpartum depression and anxiety, which has been exacerbated by the series of events that have upended their financial security and living conditions.  These parents live in perpetual fear regarding the family’s future as they sink deeper and deeper into debt.  In addition, mom reported having spent many sleepless nights crying and praying for help as she lives in terror of being unable to feed her family and as well as keeping them safe from COVID 19.

Any support that you can provide to this family will be truly appreciated and used to reduce the mounting debt that may have a lasting negative impact on their lives.
