Mayela Ochoa is an outgoing person, with an amazing vision towards life. I consider her a true fighter and a visionary of hope that will not surrender under any circumstances, she is also an amazing human being I call my friend. The last 10 year of her life has been a rollercoaster.
The critical part of my friend’s life starts back in 2008, when she was finishing all the requirements to become a Canadian Resident. During the medical check-ups something came back which she was not ready to even digest. The doctors found a shadow in her Thorax that needed immediate attention.
At that time she did not have medical coverage in Canada and they had to fly back to Mexico (her native Country) to have this taken care of. In deed the diagnostic was not pretty; she had a tumor in her Thymus Gland and was leaning over her heart which needed immediate extraction (thymectomy). During the procedure they noted the tumor had spread to the pleura of the lung and also needed immediate attention. As a consequence they remove part of the affected lung (lobectomy)
The road to recovery was not simple at that time, as the “Stage IV” Thymona needed intense chemotherapy and multiple radiation sessions. This caused an autoimmune disease to her body called Myasthenia Gravis (a chronic disease causing weakness to the main muscles in her face, arms and legs)
The recovery in Mexico took more than a year. Both her Husband (Bryon) and Mayela were physically and mentally devastated, they had used all of their life savings to cover the procedure and the recovery. Bryon had to fly constantly between Mexico and Canada in order to keep his job. They sold everything so they could to sustain themselves.
She has now returned to Canada, as a Canadian Resident. She has been back at the hospital numerous times with 4 mayor relapses and all the complications you can imagine. On her last visit to the hospital the doctors found that there is a relapse on the thymus gland cancer. As a consequence she is recovering from a renal insufficiency which she needs to recover from before taking her the next step.
Currently Mayela is waiting for a CT scan, for a new respiratory test and a follow-up appointment with the Oncologist. Her last prognosis has not been good, however and overall she is still optimistic that this is only another hurdle in her life, and as the fighter she is she will come out triumphant again.
I turn to you for help. The financial situation in their household is critical; they have both exploited all of the resources available. My friend does not have the strength or the physical capacity to keep on working and help out (her last job was 6 months ago); Bryon now has 2 jobs just to try and keep up with the medical expenses and the day to day.
Bless your heart and thank you.
