Help for Dave Covel

Our friend, Dave Covel and chief repairer of the business known as DC Appliance repair has been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer. Treatment for this type of cancer is generally straightforward. However, testing and treatment cannot be found on Kauai or even in the state of Hawaii.

Research on identifying the best option for diagnosing this type of cancer led Dave to an oncology center in Phoenix, AZ. Dave flew to Phoenix and contacted the doctor. Due to limited funds, his wife, Caelica, could not accompany him. After two weeks and having multiple tests completed, the question was "what's next?" Dave's doctor recommended that Dave remain in Phoenix, while they determined the next steps to be taken. This option would require Dave to stay in Phoenix for six more weeks. Not having the funds to rent a hotel room and or a car, Dave was camping in parking lots and parks (he'd brought a tent and sleeping bag) and walking to the different testing locations.

Further investigation showed that Los Angeles was home to several outstanding treatment facilities. Dave left Phoenix and is now staying with his daughter in LA, a nurse. and is contacting LA doctors to complete his treatment.

So, let's see where we are:

1. First, "Aggressive" prostate cancer is more severe than "standard" prostate cancer. Treatment will be more severe and take longer. Recovery with take months, not weeks.

2. Dave is not, and will not, be able to work throughout the treatment or for a significant part of the recovery time. Funding for living expenses for Caelica here on Kauai, including their rental housing as well as for living expenses in LA are "mushrooming."

3. Dave has medical insurance, but additional hospital/doctor expenses, transportation, etc. are not covered.

Dave has been a valuable member of our community. He has been active in Boy Scouts, Lions Club, PTSA and other community projects throughout the island. He has always been willing to serve when called upon.
