Our Friend Billy Behan’s house adaptation fund

Billy and Patsy Behan have lived in Clodagh Drive, Clonea Power for the last 40 plus years. Both Billy and Patsy have been active members of our community and our parish. Diagnosed with diabetes at 21 years of age, Billy has lived and managed his diabetes for 47 years, and taking every little hurdle in his stride.

In 2018 after 40 plus years his diabetes started to take its toll on Billy’s body. Following some hard times, in February 2022, the difficult decision was made to amputate Billy’s left leg for both his health and well-being. This decision was not done lightly or easily and has impacted on both Billy and Patsy’s quality of life greatly. After 14 hard weeks Billy returned home to Clonea, where the full impact on Billy’s life became reality.

Billy’s family home in Clonea Power will now require major adaptation and wheelchair accessibility to suit his needs. The house in its current layout and structure is not suitable for Billy to live the independent life that he has always enjoyed and wishes to have again. The recommendations for these adaptations have come from Billy’s Occupational Health Team in Cashel, they’ve recommended a bedroom extension, a wet room and multiple access ramps to facilitate a wheelchair.

A County Council Housing Adaptation Grant has been approved in May towards the cost of the work. However with the huge rise in the cost of building materials the family will be left with a shortfall of €45,000. The family have been informed they now have six months to complete the works.

To this end, on behalf of the family we are asking, for your help to fund the shortfall to complete these necessary renovations. Billy’s family would be very appreciative of any support that you can give to help undertake these essential adaptations on his home.
