Our Friend Betty

Donation protected
You may or may not know Rebecca Waggoner aka Betty Burns. But you may have felt her impact in your life. If you’ve ever attended the Hammock Hangout at Burning Man, or ridden on the RVIP Lounge, or ordered dope schwag  for your tech startup, odds are you’ve engaged with her in some magical way.

As you also may or not know, Betty has breast cancer right now, and is in the process of kicking it in the ass. She is undergoing at least a year of chemotherapy and multiple surgeries. It is an emotionally grueling and physically taxing shitshow that no one should have to endure but unfortunately is the path to recovery.

As a self-employed single mom, Betty has had a lot to juggle while she’s sick, and this is taking a toll on her health and finances. Side effects from the chemo are drastically limiting her ability to work. Now is our time to help her.

If you are a friend, please consider donating to this GoFundMe, and sharing it far and wide.

If times are tight, give her a supportive text/email/snail mail letter and send her some love to let her know we are all thinking about her.

Thank you, and may the Force be with us all.

We set our goal for $20,000. Her copays alone are already at $15,000 and that doesn't even address the necessities.

A special note from Whisper (Robin Fitzgerald)

Betty is my first person to go through Cancer. Many of you have already lived through this experience. I didn't know what it meant.  That it is awful and terrible is an understatement beyond. It's forgetting how to open your phone for the coupon at the check out.  It's your hands freezing up and not being able to control them and being so embarrassed and grateful at the same time for the help from strangers.  Food tasting like cardboard or pennies or worse, and then being scared you are not getting any nutrients in your body because you cannot keep that food in your body long enough for it to possibly benefit.  Using all the strength you have to put clothes on and get in your car to pick up your son because his bicycle tire blew out on the way to school and you are so there for him that you will drag yourself out of the house and bring him to school and take the bike to a shop in 106 degree heat because that's what moms do and he is worth it!  Sitting in the hospital getting chemo for hours.   Seeing nurses come and go for shift change but you are still there and they are so nice and lovely and your just sitting there while a medication is being pumped into your veins that's poisoning you along with the cancer.  You thank god for this medication and that you bought yourself health insurance to cover the cost which is $60,000 a pop, if you had to pay full price.  It's staying in your house being still and sick and alone.  It's making small goals like getting to the mail box and sometimes finding a bit of joy there.  It's sitting back and watching your kids thrive and not taking part because you physically can't and that hurts worse than any chemo.  It's worrying about the surgery and how you will recover when you are in this state already.  Then on top of it all it's worrying about what is going to happen to you. I stare this cancer in the face with you friend. We all hold hands and form a circle around you. You are not alone. We are here for you. We love you.
