Hello, my name is Ann also known as 'Boss' to our day-time concierge, our friend, Andrei whom I've had the privilege of knowing for the past 18 years. Andrei was a shy young man when he first started the job and quickly grew into a chatty, funny and friendly face that all residents, guests and contractors were happy to see. Andrei is the type of person who would respond first to help others, always willing to lend a hand, even if it meant helping during his lunch or dinner break.
About a year and half ago, Andrei discovered a lump on his leg. This was quickly investigated and was diagnosed as sarcoma. After many months of radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery, Andrei was ready to return to work! His strength was seen each day as he showed up to work, never complaining, never showing how sick he felt, just his chatty, funny self. All the residents were thrilled to have him back 'behind the desk' and excited to catch up. While Andrei continued with regular checkups and continued with radiation, his health quickly turned when the doctors advised that "it has spread to your lungs". More radiation, more chemo and another surgery. All the while Andrei's positive outlook and spirit was something I have never witnessed of someone who is so ill. Shortly after, Andrei needed to stop working under doctors' orders. Monday, August 7th is a day that I will never forget. A phone call from Andrei's friend letting me know that Andrei has taken a bad turn. He had a stroke while at home with his dad and had two brain surgeries. My mind was blank, I didn't hear the rest of the words spoken. I later found out that Andrei was also paralyzed on the right side of his body and wasn't able to communicate as a result of the stroke.
Andrei's dad has been by his side every day. He never missed an appointment, picked Andrei up from work to take him to treatment, stayed with him, talked to him, comforted him, and sat in silence with him. After meeting Andrei's dad, I now understand where Andrei gets his strength from.
I set up this page not only to share Andrei's story but to alleviate some of the financial burden that Andrei's dad is experiencing. Parking costs in multiple hospitals, gas, home modifications for Andrei, and extra care.
Any support that could be provided to this family during this unimaginable time is greatly appreciated.
