Hope for Phoebe

Phoebe, is a sweet little two year old from Geelong who lights up every room she walks into. She loves music, books, and giving high fives. Her happy smile and wave hello will absolutely melt your heart.

But Phoebe’s fighting a fight no child should ever have to face. Phoebe was born with an extremely rare and complex blood vessel condition, so rare that only around 350 cases have ever been documented worldwide.

Right now, Phoebe’s liver is unable to filter out dangerous toxins, causing them to build up in her body and brain. Chronic toxin exposure can affect growth, development, and behaviour. It causes confusion, headaches, and can even cause seizures. Without surgery, it can lead to liver tumors- liver failure and lung disorders making it difficult to breathe and putting enormous strain on her little heart.

The most frightening part is that life-threatening complications can appear suddenly even when she seems perfectly fine.

Earlier this year, Phoebe suffered a terrifying setback. High toxin levels caused brain swelling that left her in a coma-like state. Watching her lie there, not knowing if she would wake up, was the most frightening experience of my life.

But there is HOPE

I started searching the world for answers and found U.S.-based surgeon Dr Ricardo “Superman” Superina. A world-leading expert in paediatric liver and portal vein surgery. He has treated more than 120 children with conditions just like Phoebe’s, giving them the chance of a better future.

Phoebe now has a chance to follow in the footsteps of two other Australian children who have made the journey to Dr Superina and undergone successful complex surgeries.

As a mum, I’ll do absolutely anything I can to give my daughter the best chance at the happy, healthy life she deserves, but I can’t do this alone. I need your help. As with all complex medical journeys, they are never predictable, so while $250,000 is our starting goal, the final costs may be higher or lower depending on Phoebe’s surgery, location, treatment needs, recovery and follow-up care
