Youth in Action: a group of dedicated North Shore dancers, age 12-17, have earned the honor of being invited to shine on stage in New York this summer.

To perform on stage in New York is something most dancers dream of since they slip on their first pair of dance shoes and this July that dream is becoming a reality for 16 aspiring artists from Pro Arte Centre. The dancers, ranging in age from 12 to 17, have been invited to showcase their talents at the 2015 National Finale of New York City Dance Alliance. These performers all share a love dance, dedication to their art and excitement about performing in the heart of New York!

The group earned the right to dance at Nationals by winning the Critics Choice award for their contemporary piece "Where from Here" performed at the regional convention in Washington State in January. In addition, numerous dancers from the group were awarded Outstanding Dancer and will be performing in the National gala, an honor to be selected for.

"The hours of dedication and the hard work as a supportive team is very inspiring to watch" says choreographer and dance teacher Kim Dixon. "They chose to spend time at the dance studio over hanging out with friends or shopping. They put in the hard work it takes to really pull a piece like this together. In addition to the technical aspect their dances demand a mature emotional connection. The maturity I see developing in this group of dancers continues to impress me. They all support each other on stage and off and they are a very deserving bunch of kids" notes Dixon.

The Pro Arte dancers will be performing three group numbers in New York plus the Outstanding Dancers will also be performing solos. In addition, the dancers will take 4 days of classes in jazz, contemporary, ballet and other disciplines from superb choreographers and teachers, an opportunity which will inspire and advance each dancer. Nationals also includes college and performance auditions as well as lectures which provides the dancers with valuable advice and information as they move toward careers in the arts.

Dance is very costly and the dancers are now fundraising to help offset flights, hotels and teaching costs. In addition to the extra hours of training, the kids are now doing bottle drives, Booster Juice promotions, plant and bake sales, social nights and other activities to help realize their dream. The fundraising efforts are ongoing and all donations are gratefully accepted.
