I thought we would die. I held my little girl as the roof of the tiny school house where we had taken shelter began to lift. There were no hysterics but a terrifying calm and the ladies began to pray. I held her quietly looking around thinking where will we hide if the roof goes and silently praying as visions of my daughter being sucked out of my arms and my mother being crushed as the building disintegrated filled mind, The little school held together and we survived. After that the destruction was nothing and we were just grateful to be alive for many had been less fortunate.
Now nearly a month has passed and the reality of what we have lost is sinking in and I realise we will never be able to rebuild without help.
Our marina, the Other Shore Club, was washed away. Our cottage the half-moon was takedown to its foundation, my home was cut in half and my bedroom blew away with all my clothes and most of my belongings. My mother bedroom was also destroyed and her home sustained significant damage, her roof, flooring and most of her belongings will need to be replaced.
This money will be used to help rebuild our business and homes.
