On January 12, 2022, Oscar, who was born without an anus, will undergo his 5th surgery, which is necessary to repair an error made by his previous surgeon. This time, Oscar will be in the hands of the country’s most experienced pediatric colorectal surgeon, Dr. Marc Levitt, in Washington, D.C. It’s a long and complicated procedure- 7 hours- that will require a 1 week in-patient hospital stay and 2 weeks post-op in DC so he can be close to his care team. This is only the beginning, as he will face a long recovery at home. The burden on his parents, Renee & John, is massive.
As many of you know, Oscar has endured, and overcome, a lot. His second surgery at the age of 4 months led to complications and a terrifying 3-month hospital ordeal. It took years to bring Oscar back to full health. Today, he is some kind of magic: a joyful and comical four year old sweetheart. He loves looking for insects, dancing when he eats chocolate, and, sorry to say, throwing sand.
Oscar needs this surgery so he has a chance at being continent and not needing some type of diaper indefinitely- a big deal for a normal life. This surgery will also give him a chance at not needing a daily enema to keep his bowels healthy.
Pediatric surgery is fraught and arduous, even more so when done far from home. At a minimum, Oscar will spend 3 weeks in DC for surgery and part of his recovery, and then return again 3 months later for a final procedure. Insurance will not cover any of this because it is out of state. The associated costs are tremendous.
As badly as Renee & John wish they could do this for Oscar without asking for your help, they’ve come to realize that the expenses are too great for them to handle alone, and they humbly ask that you consider donating any amount to help with this medical trip for their sweet boy.
