Hello and thanks for visiting our fundraising page.
Oscar is the second child of Jamie and Lynsey. He has an older brother Oliver and two younger sisters, Phoebe and Lottie. Oscar is a 12-year-old lad who is fit and healthy, yet he has recently been diagnosed with Medulloblastoma - a malignant brain tumour. Oscar isn't just another person with cancer; he's friends with our sons; he's a son to our close friend Lynsey and a brother to our daughter's best friend, Phoebe, which somehow makes all of this feel so much worse.
This diagnosis is absolutely heart breaking for any family, it’s just more of a reality when it’s someone so close! Being given that diagnosis of a brain tumour was a real shock, but even more devastating was that it was malignant. Their entire world had been turned upside down within seven days of a routine eye appointment.
Oscar went for a check-up after he was prescribed glasses six months earlier. The optician found swelling of the optic nerve during the eye test, and within days, he was admitted to GOSH and underwent a 9-hour operation to remove as much of the tumour around his brain as possible. Although the operation successfully removed most of the tumour, some had to remain because of where it was situated. It was deemed too dangerous to try and remove it all. Oscar recovered well from such mammoth brain surgery, but unfortunately a few days later, the biopsy found the tumour was malignant. He went on to have a lumbar puncture to determine vital information to set out a treatment plan and whether the tumour was a secondary cancer. Thankfully it isn't, and the prognosis is good.
Oscar now has to have a 6-week course of Proton Beam Therapy - 30 sessions, broken down into five daily treatments, over a six-week period. Only two places in the UK offer this kind of treatment. The Proton Beam Therapy starts on the 7th November and ends on the 16th December, a day before Lottie's first birthday. Oscar will then begin a course of chemotherapy in the new year.
Jamie and Lynsey cannot stress how amazing the teams are at GOSH, UCLH, Broomfield and the community team looking after Oscar at home. They have also been so supportive towards the whole family in helping them come to terms with the diagnosis and with what is to come next .
We are trying to raise funds to help lessen the financial burden on Oscar's family whilst he is receiving his treatments. Jamie and Lynsey have had to take time away from work and will not be able to return fully until all the treatment has finished and Oscar is well enough to return to school. We would also love to help the whole family have the best holiday next summer once Oscar completes his treatment and he rings that bell!! This is the thing that will keep Oscar going through the coming months and gives the rest of the family something to look forward to.
The most important thing we can do to help at the moment is to try and help with the travel costs to and from the hospital and food and drink for Lynsey and Jamie, as they are not provided for when Oscar is in the hospital. Oscar will be staying in London for his treatment for the duration of the six weeks course. Jamie will remain with him most of the time, with Lynsey swapping over and taking their other three children with them at the weekends to spend time together as a family. The travel costs will be extreme, and they will have to cater for themselves whilst they are there. Hopefully, we can take this one burden away from them through people's kind donations.
We are also organising events to raise money to help. The first is our Christmas Market on Sunday 27th November.
