On January 9, 2021 Oscar (Pops), his wife Victoria (Vicky), his children and grandchildren celebrated his 67th birthday by driving to Lockhart to enjoy his favorite barbecue from Kruez Market Barbecue. After indulging in mouth-watering brisket, beef ribs and sausage, he enjoyed his favorite Blue Bell ice cream, strawberry flavored.

A few days later our family was notified that we had been exposed to Covid-19 and were in quarantine for 14 days. As the days went by some of us started getting sick and of course of greatest concern to us was Dad because of his age and the fact he had diabetes. All of us had been wearing our masks and using hand sanitizer since the beginning of Covid-19, but some of us still got sick. Almost two weeks later Dad was taken to the hospital with trouble breathing. He hadn’t told anyone that he felt bad and we had no idea just how sick he was. We prayed that he was strong enough to make a full recovery. Sadly, after three weeks in the hospital his body started to shut down. February 11th Dad took his last breath and joined our Lord and Savior in heaven. His passing was sudden and completely unexpected. Our family is beyond devastated. Never could we have imagined that celebrating Dad’s birthday would be our last family gathering with him, but we are ever so grateful to have spent his last birthday with him.

Pops served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, he loved his country. He was an active member of the American Legion H U Wood Post 245 where he served for several years as Chaplain. He was proud to carry the United States Flag at many different ceremonies in the Guadalupe County Area, especially the annual 4th of July Parade in Seguin, Texas, many times with his sons and recently with his oldest grandson.

Dad was the type of person who never met a stranger. Many times on our outings together we’d lose sight of him for what seemed like hours at a time while he chatted someone up. He was always willing to share his faith or make someone laugh,. A devout Catholic, he was an active member of Our Lady of Guadalupe church where he served in many different capacities. He had just retired in the last year and was looking forward to having more time to spend with his family and grandchildren.

Dad and Mom have been happily married for 36 years. He was her rock and the primary breadwinner. We are setting up this memorial fund to help Mom ease some of the burden to help cover funeral costs and medical expenses.

Our family would like to thank each and every one of you for your prayers, love and support while Dad was in the hospital and now as we grieve and prepare to lay Dad to rest. Thank you and God Bless you all.
