Oromos of Wallo and Borana Need our Help
Oromos of Wallo are under attack once again. For the 5th time since 2018, Oromos of Wallo are attacked by a concert of armed elements of the Amhara National Regional State, namely the Amhara Special Forces, the Amhara Fanno, and Amhara Militia.
This renewed attack started on the 24th of January 2023. It’s part of an ethnic cleansing operation launched to kill, destroy, and terrorise the Oromo civilians into forced displacement. Accordingly, the towns of districts such as Jillee-Dhummugaa now targeted for a comprehensive series of attacks. Towns such as Baalcii, Wasan-Qurqur, Caffaa, Sanbatee, Jawwaahaa, Walakkoo, Godaa, etc are the ones experiencing mayhem, death, fire, and destruction.
The reinforcement for the Amhara forces continue to flow from the direction of Kombolcha (N), Debreberhan(S), and Haaxaayyee (SE).
The destruction on civilian lives, bodies, and properties is immense. So far, close to one hundred civilians are brutally murdered. Hundreds more are injured and in need of emergency medical attention. Numerous towns and villages are set ablaze. Tens of thousands of civilians (mostly women, children, and the sick) are displaced as they fled to the forests and mountains for hiding. Properties (stores, shops, warehouses, and other forms of infrastructure) are looted, vandalised, and destroyed.
At the time of writing, the local (Zone Administration) authorities are asking people to leave the area. The people are insisting on staying. The more they do, the more likelihood for the number of civilian casualties to rise.
Tens of thousands are now facing starvation and lack of medical attention.
Similarly, our people in Borana are suffering from drought-driven famine. Over 560 persons are awaiting death from famine every day.
JIRRA seeks to contribute its part by being there for our people in Wallo and Borana. To make matters worse, the person who assists us in distributing aid to these drought affected people, Engineer Daniel (Kara Deemaa) is now arrested by the regime in the Borana Zone.
