Hi! My name is Jess Miller, proud Auntie of this 7 year old badass kiddo I call Bubba =)
Cancer--more specifically Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma (words I will forever curse) has stolen my nephew's childhood innocence and has plagued his body in unfathomable ways.
New Years Eve 2022--having the family over for games and to ring in the new year together--that excitement ended when Orion said "hey auntie" and didn't sound like himself. I looked into his throat and I knew, I couldn't hide the fear I felt as I peered into his baby blue eyes and then up into my sister's.
New Years Day 2023-- we met Dr. Robinson--the on-call doctor who performed emergency surgery to remove a golf ball sized tumor from Orion's soft palette. The man who saved Orion's life and has gone above and beyond in every way to help our family--we are forever grateful.
January 10th--after 9 of the longest days of our lives we were at Children's Hospital for PET scan results and received the initial blow. Orion will have 67 weeks of weekly and every few weeks daily chemotherapy. He will also have to endure 6 weeks of daily radiation to his throat, meaning he will also soon have a PEG tube placed as this will render him unable to eat or drink.
January 17th-- Children's Hospital for a Port placement, bilateral bone biopsy from both hips and his first round of chemotherapy. It was just plain awful. PTSD. Watching the things he had to endure was torture, it was quite the sister trip--zero stars, do not recommend!
He was home 3 days before his counts dropped to zero and he had to be readmitted to Children's--this will be the yo-yo he's tied to for next 1.5 years.
This has truly made time stop for our family, yet the world continues to move on around us.
A once energetic, sport loving, gamer, sourpatch kid....has morphed into the "cancer kid." The world is cruel when you look different. Orion lost his hair in a matter of 2 weeks, requires medication around the clock for pain/nausea most days, more hand sanitizer and mask wearing to drive anyone mad and he can't just be a kid anymore. We are all feeling all the things right now.
I am here to ask for help. A kiddo with cancer is hell enough, but choosing between paying bills and being at his bedside should not be a decision that any mother should have to make. He requires 24/7 care resulting in one income for the family. The 23$ a month she receives in child support just doesn't stretch far these days!
Asking for help is hard, we are a very strong and close knit family which helps tremendously from the mental health standpoint but that doesn't help pay the bills. Daily trips to Omaha add up way to quickly ya'll!
They are starting on a LONG journey that we know is going to get far worse before it gets any better so I not only ask for your thoughts and prayers but for my friends and my community to please help my nephew get through the hell is facing head on!
Please don't take offense when I say PLEASE put your money where your mouth is and help a kid out!
And of course if you can't help financially please SHARE THIS!!!!!!!
