The Picture the Homeless Oral History Project

The Picture the Homeless Oral History Project is shaping up to be as bold and beautiful as Picture the Homeless itself.   I’m asking a select group of folks for support, but please do not share this appeal.  Fundraising for this project is not intended to compete with fundraising for Picture the Homeless in any way.

In other words, if you can only make one donation, give it to PTH.  But if you are able, your contribution towards documenting 17 years of bad ass, grass roots homeless organizing will be deeply appreciated!

I’m at Columbia in the Oral History program full time, and have begun interviews with long time PTH members.  While I am just learning this craft, there are many similarities between oral history and community organizing.  Emergent themes are embedded in members’ stories.  The project will be centered around the interviews with members: reflecting the mission of the organization.  PTH has a vast archive, which we made sure to preserve along the way, that will supplement the oral histories and which the Board has authorized me to use for this project.  This phase – to be completed by April, 2018, includes interviewing, transcribing and building a multi-media digital presence using open source software.  We’re looking into other ways to distribute the magic once it’s done: including the creation of zines that incorporate the interviews and lessons from the archive and there are actually 3 phases to the project.  I’m happy to share with you our plans in further detail.   The interviews so far have been amazing, and I am confident that the result will be a treasure trove of organizing and movement building lessons and I am committed to seeing this project through to completion.

Please note again, that I am not circulating this request for support widely.  I do not want to detract from any financial support that you would otherwise make directly to Picture the Homeless.  If however you are moved to support, your contributions will go towards the purchase of equipment, transcription costs, printing and the creation of a digital archive using open source software.  All of the work products will be shared with Picture the Homeless.
