Oral Cancer Treatment for Arofan Gregory
Donation protected
My brilliant brother Arofan has developed oral cancer which has necessitated several procedures to treat/remove. After a major facial reconstruction using bone and muscle transplants from his leg, and skin grafts from other parts of his body, he cannot speak and is on a stomach feeding tube. What had been projected as a week-long stay in the hospital became five weeks in the intensive care unit, with a single planned surgery turning into three, as a result of complications. Although the prognosis is good, and he should eventually be able to speak, eat, and work, the process has taken months longer than we anticipated, and promises to last for several more at least. He is now undergoing chemo and radiation. His employer advanced him money which has since run out, in addition to all of his savings. He does have an insurance policy but it is insufficient in the face of bills approaching a million dollars (unclear how much of that he will pay out of pocket), and he is in danger of losing even that policy.
For those who have not met Arofan, he is a fly fisherman of the first water whose nimble brain dotes on historical strategy games. He has devoted his work life to furthering international science, addressing issues such as climate change, infectious disease, and disaster risk reduction. His raucous laugh is as infectious as they come. Having already lost our youngest brother and mother to cancer, the Gregory siblings are in shock and we all deeply appreciate any funds you may see fit to donate.
