Hello!
My name is Cindy Nguyen, and I am a student at The University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS who is part of a large network of students who engage in multicultural and philanthropy work.
As you many of you have heard, the Flint water crisis has been a huge water contamination issue that has affected thousands of individuals in Flint, Michigan who have been exposed to poisonous elements through consumption of Flint’s water supply. It has been almost two years since the switch of the water source in Flint- which means that it's been two years since the residents of Flint started complaining about the condition of their water. Today, they still don't have a clear answer on when they can expect their water supply to be safe.
Many students at the University of Kansas have gathered together and are working on a project, called Operation Flint. Operation Flint is a joint effort of multiple student organizations to raise awareness and raise monetary/water donations for the residents of Flint, Michigan who have been affected by the contaminated water, especially undocumented residents.
All funds raised will go toward purchasing water cases for two organizations in Flint: Crossing Water Emergency Relief and the Hispanic/Latino Collaborative. The water cases will go directly to Crossing Water Emergency Relief, an organization that helps families in Flint find resources to keep their families healthy during this time of crisis as well as the Hispanic/Latino Collaborative in Flint, an group that works to get resources for undocumented residents in the city. The organizers of Operation Flint plan on transporting the water cases to Flint on April 1st-3rd, as our group of 10-15 students who have organized this project also plan on doing service work while in Flint for both Crossing Water and the Hispanic/Latino Collaborative. More information about Crossing Water can be found below:
"Crossing Water is working with multiple community-based organizations, churches, and community residents of Flint, MI, and a legion of volunteers from around the state, to ensure that ALL residents have access to safe drinking water, information on how to access and utilize resources available to them, and access to medical care. "
Their network of volunteers includes social workers, public health professionals, RNs, paramedics, aid workers, front-line mental health service providers, social activists, case workers, and others.
They are sending out emergency response teams to distribute needed resources (water, filters, fixing pumbling, etc.) in vulnerable communities.
For the fundraising part of this campus-wide and community wide project, this GoFundMe page was created in order to make it easier for individuals to donate funds to Operation Flint. All of the funds will go directly to assisting those affected in Flint.
