Operation Summer Exposure Reloaded

Hello, my name is River Jesse Lewis. I am a rising Senior Sociology major, Psychology minor at Morehouse College in Atlanta Georgia. Morehouse College is located in the West End, a low-income area in Southwest Atlanta. Comparatively speaking, the West End is one of the most economically challenged communities in the state of Georgia. I plan to target Atlanta as well as two communities located in the Kannapolis, Salisbury area that suffer from this same problem. In lieu of this I plan to bring 12 boys this year versus the seven that came last year. The ages will range from 10 to 15 years old. They will attend a week long summer program at Camp John J Barnhardt in New London, North Carolina. The camp will be designed to spark their interest in constructive activities they may have never gotten a chance to experience, such as fishing, kayaking, archery, rifle shooting, motorboating, paddle boarding etc. This project is particularly important to me because, coming from a single-parent household, I wasn’t afforded many opportunities. One summer, I was blessed by an anonymous individual with a trip to summer camp, and have since become a lifelong lover of the experience. I began working there at 14 and a half, and have yet to miss a summer of mentoring, leadership, and most importantly, fun! I am a firm believer in doing anything you can to improve the lives of others, and this project is just one of the many ways I plan on doing this. The camp is from July 16th-21st, so my goal is to have met my financial goal by July 15th, 2017.

 

Words can't describe how thankful I am knowing the type of impact this will make on these young men's lives! And being able to do this project again literally fills my heart with joy because these boys are truly benefiting from this summer camp.  The passion I have for mentoring and this camp extends far past my lifetime and I am truly blessed to have the amazing family and support system in my corner especially when taking on tasks like this,  simply humbled to have the opportunity to even be able to do this project again. It takes a village to raise a son , so be my village!
