Operation Restore Red October
TOYOTA Land Cruiser
T 280 ADJ
Pictured here is a 1990, Toyota Land Cruiser that has been with me for 23 years. Together we have earned our stars and stripes across Africa. The stories that it could tell would impress anyone. And if it could speak, it would convict me of “Africa Abuse”. This vehicle has close to 400,000 kilometers and has seen 2 ‘El Nino’ years and survived. Though it has only been driven in 4 African countries, it sure knows those 4 countries well. This Toyota has hauled many Pastors to new locations and has transported missionaries across these international boundaries. Many know this vehicle by its name of “Red October” which was earned during the first El Nino year of 1998 in Tanzania. Known for its distinctive roof rack of over 18 feet long, this Red Toyota Land Cruiser has made many friends. But one acquaintance that has not been too friendly, is the rough roads of Africa. They have taken their toll on Red October.
Red October is due for a major rebuild and maintenance service. Since the price of even used vehicles in Tanzania is quite expensive, it is prudent for me to rebuild this work horse and keep the wheels turning. We are on Home assignment presently and a good friend of mine in Tanzania is looking after the vehicle with hopes to rebuild her. She is running well and the engine and gear train are still in good working order. But what is needed are Tires, brakes, shocks, springs, bearings, seals and body work. (All my kids learned to drive on this vehicle ). Estimates for this overhaul is just over $5000. Compared to used vehicles around $20,000, this seems the best stewardship of God’s funds.
One problem with this kind of request is that this project is subject to US IRS laws, which means that funds generated for this project are NOT tax deductible. I wish this was different, but I do not set the laws. Virginia and I are asking the Lord to raise for us this amount of $5400 to restore this vehicle to service again. We are now working in the south coast of Tanzania, where there are many unreached people groups due to location.
Reaching them is quite challenging, especially in the rainy season. But that challenge does not deter us from bringing the Gospel to these remote locations, even if it means getting wet, or muddy. Whether it is taking evangelist to a preaching point, or the Jesus film crew to a new location, or just visiting and encouraging local believers, Red October has been a faithful partner with us for these past 23 years. We still see ourselves working in this south coast region for another 10 years, and for sure have seen the need for a faithful, dependable, and practical vehicle. Of all the vehicles that I have owned, this one fits the bill best for this sort of ministry.
I would like to ask you to join us in this task of restoring this vehicle to service again. If the Lord is leading you to help in even a small way to get Red October back on the road, I would invite you to do just that. Since this project can not be tax deductible, monies donated towards this are considered a gift to Paul and Virginia Tanner. We will be accountable to you for the funds raised to use them for this said purpose. There are several ways you can give. You can send a check to Paul Tanner, 357 Phyllis Ave, Rochelle, IL 61068. Or you can go to your bank and have them do an ACH to our PNC bank here in Rochelle. Please write us for the routing number and bank account number.
But one thing I know for sure is that this vehicle will be a great service to our ministry when we get back to Tanzania. Thank you for being a part of this unreached peoples ministry and for considering having a small part in restoring RED OCTOBER to service once again. May the Lord bless you for your kind participation in this project.
