Get Matt a Wheelchair Van
Donation protected
My name is Wendy. I am starting this GoFundMe page for my son-in-law Matthew Penman. Matt has a debilitating disability called Friedrich’s Ataxia (FA). FA is a rare inherited disease that causes progressive nervous system damage and movement problems that worsen over time. Although Matt is in a wheelchair, this has not stopped him from living life to the fullest. He is active in the community and works at a local school as a Success Coach where he assists struggling students reach their full potential. The students respond to his caring approach in a very positive manner and great things are being accomplished.
Matt’s disease has progressed to a point where his personal and professional life are affected. Professionally, he can no longer manage his job the way he needs to and there are aspects that he is not able to carry out on his own because he does not have access to a vehicle he can use independently. Matt’s job requires him to meet with students in the community to support them in removing or minimizing barriers. Personally, he is in constant pain which, although definitely does not stop him, makes life very difficult with the multiple transfers he must make throughout the day. A fall can put him out of commission for an extended period of time and causes excruciating pain for him.
Matt needs a van he can roll into without transferring out of his wheelchair. This in not just a want, this is a need. His contributions to society are great. He deserves to be able to live a life as free of pain and as safely as possible.
I am asking for donations to purchase a modified wheelchair van for him. This is a monumental task for them. I know this is a large amount of money but this is what it costs for him to be able to live life to the fullest and to his potential. The total cost of the vehicle with the modifications needed is $98,000. Matt and Jess have applied for a grant where they could receive a maximum amount of $40,000. If grants are received, I will report them immediately and adjust the requested amount accordingly. Please donate what you can for this van. It really is necessary for them.
Lastly, I would like to say that any amount you can donate would be greatly appreciated. Even if it is a small amount. It all adds up and the result will benefit many!
I will post updates with the progress from time to time. If you have questions please feel free to contact me. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
