Operation Freedom Forest

At the Humane Society for Southwest Washington, our volunteers are dedicated to making every moment outside count for our shelter dogs. While the dogs spend much of their time indoors, we believe their outdoor experiences should be enriching, joyful, and full of opportunities to learn and grow. That’s why we’re launching Operation Freedom Forest Makeover—a volunteer-led project to transform the Kathie Malone Canine Enrichment Yard, known as the “Freedom Forest,” into a vibrant playground designed to support each dog’s physical and mental well-being.

With your help, we’ll build and install a variety of enrichment structures: training platforms with ramps and bridges, a rugged tunnel for play and exploration, a pull-up bar fixture for hanging toys, durable pools for water play, and a picnic table for training and rest. We’ll also use donations for wood chip maintenance to create safe, defined play areas and to clear overgrown vegetation, keeping the yard safe and exciting for the dogs. These features will help our dogs build confidence, stay active, and develop skills that make them more adoptable. Volunteers will use the new spaces for group play, training, and special events, ensuring every dog enjoys their time outside to the fullest.

Every dollar raised will go directly toward materials and supplies, allowing us to create a safe, more stimulating environment for the dogs who need it most. If we exceed our fundraising amount, any additional funds will be used to enhance our secondary yard, the Freedom Fence, and build out the same amazing experience for even more dogs. Your support will help us turn every outdoor visit into a highlight of their day, keeping them happy, healthy, and ready for adoption.
