UPDATE: A friend loaned me the balance, and we got the operation! I'm leaving the fundraiser open, to help pay him back, and cover the aftercare costs, which are still to be determined. Thanks for all the help so far, and any future help is appreciated. Look me up on FB, my updates about Gryphon and my other two boys are there! All of us, CATS and HOOMANS, appreciate your support! <3
I threw our cat Gryphon's favorite toy, the atomic ball, into the kitchen, just as I do dozens of times a day, as I was stepping into another room. When I came back, less that a minute later, he had a very pronounced limp. He was putting NO weight on his right rear leg. I've seen this cat bounce around our house, with the other two cats, like a pinball, so I was kinda shocked. I checked him as well as a layman could, but didn't feel anything on his leg that seemed to be in pain. When I took him to the vet, she couldn't diagnose him from feeling him, without an x-ray. I used some of this month's rent money for the x-ray, and found out that he has a fracture of the femoral head (the top of his femur, by the hip), and needs what's called FHO surgery. They gave him a shot for pain, and some ant-inflammatory pills, for the next 3 days. The vet gave me 2 options: The specialist could be called, for around $5,000.00, or their head vet could do a "modified" version of it, for around $3,000.00. We have NOT got the money for this, and the bloodwork that has to be done, before surgery (about $200.00). He's a year old, and otherwise healthy cat, with no other medical issues. Any funds raised here will go directly to the vet, for treatment of his hip. The vet told me to keep him in the carrier, and not let him walk at all, but I'll only do that when I can't keep an eye on him. I put a dish of food & water, by the base of the cat tree, where he likes to lay down. I'm also going to move one of the litter boxes there, but I carry him when he walks beyond his new "area."
I've owned/lived with many cats, over the years. Many of them have had injuries that healed badly, and suffered. The vet warned me that if he doesn't get the surgery, he may develop arthritis, and may have to get his leg amputated. Now, I'm not a vet, but I can see that he's suffering, now. That is why I am asking for help, as soon as possible. I thought I had someone to loan us the money, and scheduled the blood test for tomorrow, and surgery for Tuesday, 6/25. It fell through, so I had to call back, and cancel it. I've called the ASPCA and Humane Society, but even if I can get help from them, there will be some cost.
Anyone who knows me, even just on FB, knows how much I love animals, and in particular, the cats in my life. My GF brought home Gryphon, and Phoenix, last Christmastime, to keep our last old cat (20 YEARS!) Gizmo company, in his old age. Our other 3 cats had passed, including my beloved Buffy. It worked, both for him, and for us! He started running up and down the house with them, and resumed taking care of himself. I also noticed something about LOVE. Love doesn't get "divided up" between existing individuals, whether cats, dogs, or people, and "new" ones. The amount of love in one's heart actually GROWS, as you make new friends. Gryphon is a different cat, from the other two. He likes to play "fetch" with the "atomic ballie," as we call it. He drops it just out of our reach, trying to make us get up off our asses, to throw it again. When I say "too far," he half-assed bats it in my direction, or the opposite one. LOL! When I fall asleep, he'll bring it up on the bed. He meows "Hi"to me, when I come home at night, while the other two just run up to me. He loves Gizmo, and tries to emulate him, which is a good thing, because Gizmo's nickname from way back is "The Smart One." Since Gryphon's injury, Phoenix seems oblivious, but Gizmo is on the case, giving him kisses, and being otherwise considerate, in a cat way.
To be honest, if we can't find a way to pay for this treatment within the next week or two, we are worried about life-threatening complications that would force us to put him to sleep. I can't let that happen, and am asking anyone who cares to help Gryphon. All I have to offer is my deepest gratitude, to anyone who can help us help him to enjoy the life he deserves. THANK YOU.
