Hi everyone! Ive been volunteering in the animal shelter Alnour Tierhilfe in Morocco almost two months now, and one of the problems we are struggling with is the amount of cats.
We have a room filled with over 20 cats and it grows by the day (6 in the last 48 hours!) with people abandoning them at our door, or finding them injured. They have little/no adoption prospects and we cannot release them without castrating and vaccinating. We also have over 50 dogs at a time, and with expensive emergencies every single day, limited time and resources, the cats cant always be a priority.
People think its better to leave stray or orphaned kittens with us than on the street - not true. Cats are ridden with virus's and flu and while an adult may seem healthy they continue to shed and spread viruses, especially when stressed (the cat room stresses all of us).
These are mostly fatal to young kittens.
Kittens need to be 6 months old before castration and sadly despite our very best efforts few of ours survive that long.
Not only is it expensive to keep them, its a huge amount of work for staff and volunteers here, and its heartbreaking for all of us to watch these young babies dying. Some of them are painstakingly treated for an injury or raised from a bottle only to succumb to a flu later. People bring them here thinking we can save them but its a death sentence for young ones. But we cant deny help and we cant leave them on our doorstep.
Im hoping to raise some money to help tackle this problem and reduce the amount of healthy adult cats living here. Outside, they can have their freedom, be fed by the many kindly locals and most importantly, make the cat room a safer place for our little kittens in need.
A cat castration is 40-100 euro, a vaccination is 25.
If you can help or sponsor a cat, please do! It promises a better life for each cat, and also for our dogs, who need attention thats being spent in the crazy cat room. Every little helps.
Thank you
