As the date for my surgery gets closer, I'm growing increasingly hopeful and excited for a life in a body that matches how I've felt for a long time -- something that used to seem like an impossible fantasy is now a fast-approaching reality and that's both exciting and scary. The past few years have been a hard process of putting my emergency fund back together after an unexpected job loss -- currently I'm working full time, I'm pretty financially secure, and I have a safe place to live, but I'm still wrangling with large student loans, and I'm really intimidated by the prospect of taking on medical debt even for something that means so much to me. Gender-affirming care has a serious price tag associated with it in the USA -- I'm lucky enough to have health insurance and an incredible top surgeon who's willing to play ball, and it's intimidating to put myself out there like this, but I would really appreciate your help defraying some of the hit to my wallet.

 

My surgery is currently planned for late August or early September; the target amount of $3500 should hopefully cover surgery, grafts, anaesthesia, and the whole kit and caboodle. Your help offsetting these medical costs, even in part, would mean so much to me -- you'd be helping me achieve something I've been longing for well over ten years and taking some of the anxiety out of the recovery period. Finally, I'll be able to recover at home with the support of my friends and family, get back to work, and then wrangle any revisions or complications as they come.

 

I regret not chasing this goal sooner but the time is right for me now. I'm really looking forward to spending less money on high-powered shapewear, going swimming again, and spending my post-surgical recovery either napping or finally streaming Deadwood. Here I'll post updates and keep people posted as matters progress.
