Opening doors for Benjamin

This is so difficult to write — to acknowledge that we can’t do this alone. Our son, Benji, is an amazing, funny, perfect 11 year old tween. He was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder when he was 8 years old. This was after years of medical professionals and school systems failing him. We knew he saw the world differently and that he needed help, but we didn’t understand how to help him process the world around him.



While our parenting road hasn’t been easy.. often, a better word would be “terrifying”.. we love our little man and would do anything in the world to help him have the best chance at successfully completing school and hopefully living independently in the future.

That is why I am writing this. Our family has had a series of major financial setbacks over the past 4-5 years. I am an engineer, but have been unable to work for several years due to a seizure disorder. My wife, who has been supporting both Ben and I, almost lost her life due to a Necrotizing Fasciitis infection that caused multiple organ failure and kept her out of work for six months and caused what will likely be chronic challenges.

Currently, we are tens of thousands of dollars in debt due to past and current medical expenses and the many living expenses that we have not been able to pay. We have gotten to the point where we are not able to afford many of the therapies and everyday needs of caring for Benji (and his parents).
