Operation Butterfly Effect

When I was a little girl, my father came home one day with a cassette tape filled with speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King. I remember listening to them while cleaning, before bedtime, or just when our home needed a little boost. At a very young age I began to wonder what MLK's children must have thought about their father. Was it difficult to be so influential? I wondered if he knew that his dream would truly one day be a reality?

Both of my parents instilled in me the importance of serving my community. At the tender age of 11 I gave a speech about justice and equality in front of nearly 50,000 people. I was scared shitless, and I distinctly remember looking for my dad and finding him standing next to the stage, beaming, and standing tall and proud. That's how we spent most of our weekends.

My dad always used to say "We fight for the underdog"! I will never forget that. A personal hero of mine, Cesar Chavez, also fought for the underdog. His fight was for the farmworkers. He fought for their rights. And for their dignity.

Today, as a 40-year-old mother of two (and grandmother of one), I wonder if I've done enough. Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez can change the world, but can I!? And how? I am but one person. Well, if MLK and Cesar have taught me anything, it's that it takes only one person to make a difference. All of the past chapters of my book of life will not be in vain: My children, my brothers and sisters, and my community need me.

Today I know exactly what I need to do. Are you ready to change the world with me?

I have decided to lend my support to a family in need and I'm enrolling my family to join me, as well. I am extending the offer to every single soul reading this note.

Ms. Sharon Webb is a mother, grandmother and community member from South Los Angeles that has found herself raising four of her grandchildren. It is my intention to remind her that she is not alone, and that she is surrounded by the love of her community.

My request is simple --- join us as we gather together to beautify her home. The main goal is to create a space where she and her grandchildren can flourish into a bigger and better tomorrow. Which is really a message for all of us, don't you think?

Together we can change the world and it is crystal clear that the change starts with me.
