OPAL - Haydn Primary School

Concorde BGW have offered to help out the charity OPAL. This charity is in support of providing outstanding play to all children every day. It is about bringing high quality play back into schools and reintroducing risk and providing opportunity for children to engage in the 16 types of play. Because of this, OPAL have made lots of changes to the playground including a mud kitchen, reading house, scooters, a water area etc. Their next project is to build a sandpit in our school playground—a space where children can engage in imaginative play, develop motor skills, and enjoy outdoor learning.

The OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) playground is more than just a space for children to burn off energy—it’s a transformative environment where creativity, collaboration, and resilience flourish. Through OPAL's innovative approach, play becomes an essential part of learning, not an afterthought. When children are given the freedom to explore loose parts, construct their own games, and take manageable risks, they build critical life skills like problem-solving, empathy, and confidence. Especially in today’s screen-heavy world, outdoor play reclaims a vital sense of agency and wonder that structured classroom settings can’t always offer. Investing in OPAL playgrounds is investing in the whole child: their well-being, their imagination, and their future.

Concorde BGW will be undergoing the construction of the play area and would appreciate all the help we can get to build this as it is for a good cause and will help so many young people develop and progress.
