Onur, Umut and Tulay Yucel

On behalf of Onur, Umut, and Tulay's friends and family, we are reaching out at this very difficult time in need of the support of the broader community.

For the family of 10-year-old Onur Yucel, the future holds many unknowns. Onur was critically injured in the June 7th Cates Park boat accident that also cut short the vibrant life of his lifelong friend. Onur remains in hospital with an uncertain future ahead of him. Onur's recovery will be lengthy and will come with immense challenges as Onur’s life-changing injuries may require an as-yet-undetermined level of care. The beautiful, sunny day of excitement and fun on the water ended in tragedy and left Onur with serious head trauma among other painful injuries. For Onur, a day on the water was never to be turned down. Be it boating, swimming, sailing, tubing, or surfing - Onur would give it a go (often bringing Potato the Pug along).

Single-mom Tulay is a preschool child-care provider who is now spending every spare moment between the hospital and home in Surrey where Onur’s older brother, Umut (12), is coping with his own trauma from the accident, loss of his friend and concern for his little brother. This is a tight family with few supports to call upon. Please consider supporting Tulay and her boys as they navigate this unimaginably painful time.
