The greatest gift is the gift of opportunity, and exposure. Exposure breeds curiosity, curiosity leads to growth, and growth challenges status quo.
Khyber Girls Medical College in Peshawar, Pakistan (https://www.kgmc.edu.pk) is a small women's medical college with a big mission: to empower women in one of the most conservative states of Pakistan.
This empowerment is two-fold: first, to provide a culturally appropriate environment where parents are comfortable allowing their daughters to seek medical education; second, to improve the healthcare seeking behavior of women, who do not visit male physicians for cultural reasons, by increasing the number of female physicians in the community.
Since these young ladies are going to go on to play a critical role in improving community maternal and child health, the quality, breadth, and depth of their medical education is most important. This goal can be achieved by giving them the opportunity, and exposure to top-tier medical and clinical knowledge, and there is a perfect tool: UpToDate (www.uptodate.com).
UpToDate is the world's leading evidence-based online medical library and clinical practice guide that is peer-reviewed by expert physicians. We use it extensively in the U.S., and other parts of the world. I used UpToDate online medical library through medical school, clinical electives, postgraduate education, clinical research, observerships, and now, for continued medical education.
Being a small public medical college that was established in 2004, KGMC is very limited in its ability to purchase medical education software and medical journal subscriptions, largely due to archaic and self-destructive purchase laws set by the government. Therefore, they rely heavily on philanthropy.
My goal is to purchase and gift them an institutional subscription to UpToDate online medical library with your enthusiastic support. There is no greater gift than the gift of opportunity and exposure. I am sure many of you will agree with me.
So, please join me in giving them both an opportunity and exposure that will open the minds of medical students, medical residents, nursing staff, faculty, and clinicians.
Since this campaign is being managed by me alone, there is zero risk of pilferage as there is no transfer of funds between people or institutions. I have already met with the Dean and Associate Dean (Jan 4, 2019) to review IT support, piracy prevention, and internet speed. Additionally, I have been able to have their Learning Resource Center (LRC) with computer terminals remain open later into the evening so that the students can have access beyond 5pm; previously the LRC closed at 2pm.
Success lies in the number of donations, not necessarily the amount. So, please do contribute; any amount is deeply appreciated and will have an immediate, tangible impact!
If you have any questions, please reach out to me at [email redacted].
On a personal note, please accept my sincere gratitude for supporting a cause so close to heart. I am from this northern state of Pakistan, which is also the home state of Malala Yousafzai. I was the first physician in my generation on both sides of my family. Despite having had the support of progressive parents, I rebelled against many societal and cultural “norms” in pursuit of fulfilling ambitions. These young ladies are fighting that patriarchal system from within, with education. Please support me in adding a dimension of the highest caliber to their medical education and training. Thank you.
