Ongoing medical expenses for Krystin Carlson

This GoFundme Campaign is to help Kent and Krystin Carlson with their ongoing medical expenses.

If Krystin seems familiar, you may have known her as a teacher (Pearley/Jefferson), assistant principal (Navarre) or principal (Marquet Montessori). She was with the South Bend Community School Corporation for 16 years. During this time, she has touched many lives in a positive way. Her choice would still be to do this today if she were so able.

Instead, Krystin was forced into medical retirement after her 2nd neurological surgery in May of 2014. In October of 2016, Kent realized it was no longer safe for Krystin to be home alone for 10-12 hours every weekday.

Krystin and Kent will be seen on WNDU TV in South Bend. They are being interviewed about medical debt. This interview is scheduled to be shown during the news on the 17th of May, 2022.

One of the points brought up is how much medical debt can consume a family's income.

In their case, the average monthly expense for their medical care is over 70% of their income. It is over 3 times the size of their mortgage just to put it into perspective.

Krystin has several neurological needs which requires many drugs and other therapies just to be occasionally functional.

The medical needs alone have wiped out all of their retirement funds. Additionally, it is erasing the remaining equity in their home.

The Carlsons have also had to do several updates to their house to make it safer for her. She has had several falls which have resulted in additional medical issues.

As a result of those falls, she is in need of knee surgery for both knees and a 4th neurological surgery. The office visits, travel and other copays will be in addition to their usual medical expenses.
