Meet Michael – a bright, dedicated, and talented 13-year-old who has discovered his passion for music in the most unexpected way.

At the start of 7th grade, Michael was the “new kid” at his junior high school. Already a skilled alto saxophone player with three years of experience, he was ready to join the band. But then the band teacher made a surprising request—someone needed to volunteer to switch to an instrument most students had never even heard of: the bassoon.

Without hesitation, Michael raised his hand. That brave decision changed his life.

Over the past seven months, Michael has fallen in love with the deep, expressive voice of the bassoon. He practices every day, recently completing a 21-day challenge to prove his commitment. And he’s not just playing for fun—he has big goals:

Audition for the San Bernardino County Youth Symphony this fall

Join his high school’s orchestra next year

Qualify for both district and all-county band

Begin private lessons to refine his skills and pursue excellence

Michael’s passion and drive are rare—but so is his instrument. Out of our entire school district, only six students play bassoon. This uniqueness opens doors for college scholarships and conservatory-level opportunities—but it also comes with a huge challenge: the cost.

Entry-level bassoons typically range from $6,000 to $15,000, making them one of the most expensive instruments in the orchestra. Unfortunately, renting isn’t a realistic option—most music stores either don’t carry bassoons or won’t loan them to younger students due to the high cost and liability involved with such a rare and valuable instrument. Michael has spent the summer researching secondhand instruments across the country and—amazingly—has found two high-quality options in the $4,000 range. This is a golden opportunity to support his future.
