January 23rd update:
Mayo went great and it's the longest appt well have there. We are should be starting his treatments next Monday on the 29th! He will be home UNLESS there's a medical emergency or something. He's doing fantastic especially since he's home now and we're going day by day but it's a little less anxiety now that biopsy is done and random grief/sadness. I think the fact he's so much himself is what keeping us all going!
Harrison is your typical happy care free kid, always thinking about the future and his big plans. He is naturally sweet, kind, and empathetic. Truly a kind soul who lights up a whole room. He brings such joy to all who know and have met him..
On Sunday January 14th at 530pm, Hailey was playing with the boys and noticed Harrison's smile was very uneven. The decision was made to take him to the Phoenix Childrens ER where they were taken immediately back in CT within 10 mins upon arrival. They were informed Harrison needed to be transported ASAP to PCH main campus for an MRI. They were running stroke protocol and this unbothered boy actually fell asleep during the imaging, not knowing his life was about to be turned upside down.
An hour after the MRI the doctors informed Hailey that they saw a mass during CT. They said it could be infection but they suspected a Glioma and that a full brain/spine MRI would confirm what the mass was. Monday morning, after an 8hr wait, the Doctors took them to the consultation room and there they confirmed that sweet Harrison has a high grade aggressive Brain Stem tumor called Diffuse Intrensic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). They gave this tenacious, brave boy one year to live at best.
It's an inoperable tumor and the only course of treatment is 6 weeks of targeted radiation to improve and extend his quality of life before this tumor begins to take over again. Their family is now forced to make a lifetime of memories in such a short time.
Because of this type of tumor, it's location, and Harrison's age (7 for gods sake) he will be getting treatment M-F for 6 weeks totaling in a complete 30 day radiation treatment. Harrison is a roll with the punches kiddo and hasn't let any of this stop him from his love of art or finding all the small joys in life.
Hailey has been a stay at home mom for 7 years and Tim probably will not be back at work until AT LEAST after radiation but the longer he can be with Hailey and the kids the better is will be for all of them. Their vehicle has been having mechanical issues and they will be traveling 60 miles round trip for this treatment. Nothing is expected but any donations are beyond appreciated. All money will be used towards car repairs, costs associated with treatment, and anything Harrison's warrior heart desires to keep a smile on his face and allow for memories to be made with his family and friends.
Updates from Hailey since getting the devastating news....
On Wednesday, Harrison woke up really lethargic, dizzy, headache, vomiting, and further leg weakness. Which caused a small fall while trying to use the restroom. They took him for a STAT MRI, the tumor had some bleeding (common in tumors) which was resulting in pressure causing said symptoms we decided to push the biopsy to Friday.
Friday 1/19 at 830am the initial look under the microscope did confirm that its a high grade tumor and not something else. During Friday's OR time they put in a PICC line that stay in until he's done with radiation.
Tuesday 1/23 he’ll have a 4 hour radiation "simulation" appointment at Mayo Clinic.
